Eric Olsten, Founder

Leed AP, Class A Licensed General Contractor

Born and raised in Minnesota, I moved to the Pacific Northwest to attend Willamette University. I got my start in the building industry in the mountain West, when my job as a ski patroler was cut short one season due to a bad snowpack. I ended up working as a carpenter in Crested Butte, Colorado, where I worked under a master builder on the historic preservation of an old mining community -- and I never looked back. I moved to Boulder, CO where I was a general contractor working in green building and as a building science consultant.

In 2011 I moved to Durham, NC, where my wife was working towards a PhD at Duke University. There, I managed whole-house renovations and additions for Grau Building Company, one of the Triangle's premier boutique builders.

My family moved to Richmond in 2017 so that my wife could take a position as an English professor at VCU and Olsten Building Company was born.

Meet Our Team

I'm a Richmond local, born and raised, and a proud VCU grad with both my undergrad and graduate degrees in education. I spent six years teaching 4th and 5th grade before making my first career change to admin and data analytics at Hardywood.

When I head Olsten was looking for an Office Manager, I knew it was the perfect fit! I've always loved tackling DIY projects at home, so it felt like a fun way to pick up some new skills, too.

When I'm not at work, you'll often find me in my backyard with a book in hand. I'm an avid reader, always on the lookout for my next favorite read. I'm also a big fan of documentaries, so send your recommendations my way!

What would your dream home include (no budget limits)?

Heated floors, screened-in porch with a swing bed for reading and napping!

Alex Hennig, Office Manager

I was born in Charleston, WV, and moved to Richmond in 1988. I transferred from WVU to VCU and began working in construction during summer breaks. That’s when I fell in love with building, restoration, and the craftsmanship behind it all. With a background in historic restoration, I’ve spent the last 36 years working across all areas of construction—from residential to light commercial.

Outside of construction, I’ve been training in jiu jitsu for 20 years. I also enjoy slowly remodeling our 1952 MCM home and being a dad to our two boys—whether that’s cheering on the sidelines or just being present day to day.

Favorite architectural era or style?

Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern design, and I’m a big fan of Joseph Eichler’s work.

Fahs Wood, Construction Manager

Marcie Murphy, Project Manager

I’m a client turned employee, which gives me an insider’s understanding of what it’s like to navigate a home renovation. After experiencing Eric’s dedication to craftsmanship and thoughtful approach during a renovation of my Bellevue home, I was excited when he asked if I’d ever considered project management, and the timing was perfect. After 20 years in corporate marketing, I was ready to shift my career toward a long-time passion for home design.

As a project manager, I enjoy balancing the big picture with the fine details while keeping projects on track. Seeing firsthand how even the small decisions influence the overall home, I’ve grown especially committed to functional design - homes that feel right to live in are the ones that truly endure.

Howdy! I’ve called Richmond home since 2017, where I quickly connected with a community of makers and creatives at Build, RVA. With a background in custom cabinetry and furniture making, I believe the fine details make a big impact. As a project manager at Olsten Building Company, I enjoy staying hands-on, finding creative solutions, and working closely with clients to bring their ideas to life.

Outside of work, I love riding my bike, hiking with my wife and our German Shorthaired Pointer, Waylon, and working on old vehicles.

Favorite architectural era or style?

I’m especially drawn to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian style for its use of natural light, approachable materials, and thoughtful integration with the surrounding landscape. These pared-down homes focus on design and functionality in a small footprint, making every detail feel intentional.
